Kitchen Island Wine Fridges & Coolers

What is a Kitchen Island Wine Cooler?

An kitchen island wine cooler (also known as a wine fridge) is a type of wine fridge designed to fit underneath a kitchen worktop. It's designed specifically for enclosed spaces, and so requires less ventilation than a freestanding wine cooler.

They come in two different types, as either a built-in or integrated design. The main difference between these two is the ventilation requirements, as a built-in model requires a vent at the bottom for airflow, whereas an integrated model can be installed flush with the cabinetry with no visible vent.

They store your wine in the perfect temperature range for serving or for long term storage.

They add a real wow factor to a kitchen space, and are ideal for regular wine drinkers or for when you're entertaining. They're also ideal for long term wine storage.

Benefits of Kitchen Island vs Other Wine Fridges

The main benefit of choosing a below-countertop model vs other types is that it saves you space in the kitchen.

Other models require the fridge to be freestanding, meaning it takes up a large area of the floor, limiting your usable space.

Whereas kitchen island models allow you to build them into the kitchen cabinetry, so you don't need to waste any extra floor space.

Important Features of Kitchen Island Wine Fridges

All our kitchen island fridges feature stunning UV protected glass doors, designed to stop ambient light from aging the wine prematurely.

They use wooden shelves, with some models using pull-out shelves, slanted at an angle that protects the wine cork from drying out.

The use of internal LED lighting provides a beautiful appearance in your kitchen space, making the fridge a focal point of design and conversation.

They use clean, modern designs, and user-friendly operating controls (such as easy-to-use digital LED displays).

Along with this, most models come as either black or stainless steel, so you can choose a style that fits your kitchen design.

If you’re concerned about energy efficiency, we list the energy rating of each fridge on the product page, so you can make an informed decision.

Expert Wine Storage stocks both compressor and thermo-electric wine fridges.

Make sure not to use a traditional fridge freezer for chilling wine, as the temperature will often be too cold, and it can damage the wine.

    Bottle Capacity

There are a number of bottle capacity and size options available with kitchen island wine fridges, but most have capacities from single figures right up to about 50 bottles.

The total capacity available will very much depend on the type of bottles being stored, as with the majority of wine coolers, their capacity is measured in Bordeuax bottles.

Conveniently, the shelves in most units are removable to allow for storage of bigger bottles like Burgundies and even magnum bottles. The smaller-sized appliances are ideal for holding a small number of bottles at serving temperature - perfect for a party.

How To Choose a Kitchen Island Wine Refrigerator

When trying to figure out which type of kitchen island wine chiller you need, you’ll have to think about the available space and what you’re going to store in it.

If you drink a range of wines such as whites, reds, and maybe some fizz, you should probably be looking at a dual zone wine cooler rather than a single zone, as it will give you the option to store different wines at different temperatures (but more on that in the next section).

This feature is also useful for storing and serving temperatures. For example, you can store some wines at 12°C and have a few bottles at serving temperature of 14 - 20°C.

If you only need a small number of bottles stored, then use the filter to choose a smaller capacity wine cooler.

If you're limited on space, then use the filter to choose a smaller-width fridge, such as the Dunavox DAUF-19.58B - Single Zone - 19 Bottles - Built In - 295mm Wide.

As the temperatures are adjustable, you can store all wines in there, from sweet and sparkling rose, to dry and semi-sweet dessert wines. Even your old vintage wine will be perfectly stored in a wine fridge, just like a traditional wine cellar.

    FAQs

Can I Store Red & White Wines In a Wine Fridge?

There are a number of models available which offer dual zone temperature technology, allowing you to store reds and whites in the same wine cooler at different, precise temperatures.

This is also perfect for ageing wine and serving wine storage at the appropriate temperature levels making dual zone kitchen wine fridges versatile for a range of wine storage requirements.

What Sized Wine Fridges are Available?

The kitchen island wine coolers we offer are available in the common sizes of 300mm, 400mm, 500mm, and 600mm wide. This allows them to fit into kitchen cabinets with only the minimum amount of ventilation space.

How to Install Kitchen Island Wine Fridges?

Each type of fridge has a slightly different installation process, so it's best to consult the product page for how to install it correctly.

You will often have advice on the sized fridge you need from your kitchen designer, which should help to narrow down your choice.

The majority of kitchen island or built in wine fridges are manufactured to standard dimensions, with a height of 820mm and depth of between 500 and 580mm. These standard measurements ensure the units we offer will fit in the vast majority of kitchen designs.

They also come with adjustable fittings, to help you make small changes in height for levelling purposes.

Can You Store Beer and Wine in These Fridges?

Yes, kitchen island wine fridges are designed to store wines primarily, but they're also perfectly equipped to chill and store other liquid refreshments like beer, soft drinks, and tonics.
